Stepping Out

from Piano Pieces by Lee Lucas

about

"Stepping Out" is a piece I done back on 28th September 2012. It was very much an improvisation but it was improvised around the same set of chords you will find in Pachebell's Cannon. It's a piece I had played my own arrangement of for many years on the piano, only this improv was a completely different way around it, and more of my own thing.

This improvisation is very loose too I feel, and far from my better days on the keys at all. I never put the piece on the cloud because I felt it was too loose at the time, and perhaps needed some strings to accompany it to hide some of the imperfections in my playing.

It was just over a year later Peter Vorlander a.k.a. CS Minor on Soundcloud approached me via a message and said we should do a collaboration together someday. I asked if he had done a piece maybe I could do something with, but he had nothing. So I sent him the piece and asked if he would like to put some strings over it for me. He did that, and sent me the piece back on the 20th October 2013.

The fact that we both felt that both of our work was weak on it, prevented us from putting it out, but about a year even later in 2014 Peter messaged me having found the piece again and said he was having different thoughts about it, having heard it again after a year or so, and felt we should put it out. So I decided to give it another listen, and said OK. But it will have to be next week as I had just put a piece out on the cloud.

I never did hear from Peter again so the piece never got put out at all,. but the reason I decided to include my piano solo of the piece on my album, is quite simply because playing for me is not about perfection at all, and it's what the piece itself says that matters the most, and I do feel even for its imperfections honesty shines through, and I should not of tried to of hidden it by something else being played over it in the first place.
